Competition – Contest – 「競争・コンテスト・コンクール」 を英語で表現
A. Competition も Contest も どちらも コンクールの意味を持ちます。
Competition は 技の競い合い。 Contest は Noodle Eating Contest （蕎麦の早食い競争）のように 幅広く 使われます。 日本語の語源である Concour （コンクール）はフランス語のため、英語ではあまり使われません。
□ contest コンテスト
ex) He won the contest for best photograph.
彼は 写真コンテストで 優勝した
= He won the contest to see who could take the best photograph.
contest /ˈkɑːnˌtɛst/: an event in which people try to win by doing something better than others
ex) Contest winners receive a cash prize.
コンテストの勝者は 賞金をもらうことができます
□ contest （投票など）勝つために争う
ex) She plans to contest a seat in Congress next year.
連邦議会の席を取るための出馬を検討している
contest /kənˈtɛst/: to try to win (something)
ex) Both candidates have agreed to another debate before this hotly contested election.
ex) She won the competition.

competition /ˌkɑːmpəˈtɪʃən/ : a contest in which people try to win by being better, faster, etc., than others
ex) They staged a competition to see who could sell the most lemonade.
□ competition 競争
ex) The school fosters an atmosphere of competition rather than cooperation.
その 学校は 協調というよりも むしろ競争の雰囲気を 作り出している
competition /ˌkɑːmpəˈtɪʃən/: the act or process of trying to get or win something (such as a prize or a higher level of success) that someone else is also trying to get or win
ex) There will be intense competition for the top spots.
= Many people will be trying to get the top spots.
The new technology gave them a competitive edge.
その新技術は 彼らに競争力をもたらした
competitive /kəmˈpɛtətɪv/ : of or relating to a situation in which people or groups are trying to win a contest or be more successful than others
ex) It is a very competitive job market.
= A situation in which a lot of people are trying to get jobs.

steeplechase /ˈstiːpəlˌtʃeɪs/: a race in which people riding horses jump over fences, water, etc.
ex) The steeplechase is an obstacle race in athletics, which derives its name from the steeplechase in horse racing.
□ hurdle race ハードル競走
ex) The hurdles are knocked down easily if touched, which allows the athlete to continue the race even if he collides with them.
ハードルは 接触すると簡単に倒れる。 これにより 競技者が ハードルとぶつかっても レースを続けることが出来る
hurdle /ˈhɚdl̟/: a race in which runners must jump over hurdles
ex) He won a medal in the high hurdles.

rival /ˈraɪvəl/: a person or thing that tries to defeat or be more successful than another
ex) The men are romantic rivals for her affection.
□ rivalry 張り合う（こと）、競争状態
ex) In our family there was plenty of sibling rivalry.

= competition or jealousy between sisters and brothers
rivalry /ˈraɪvəlri/: a state or situation in which people or groups are competing with each other
ex) Apparently, the same old rivalries still exist.

catch–up /ˈkætʃˌʌp/ /ˈkɛtʃˌʌp/: to try to reach the same position, score, etc., as a competitor after you have fallen behind
